Another Letter From the Mother Country

Do you all remember that charming English fellow from last Friday?  Well, he is back and once again not too happy about the claims being made in our little Healthcare Debate 2009.  This time it is with reference to the Investor Business Daily editorial that claimed that Stephen Hawking would be killed under the NHS.  Well, Stephen Hawking is English and alive.  But don’t believe me take it from one of his countrymen:

Dear Sirs,

Apparently, Stephen Hawking wouldn’t stand a chance when exposed to the harsh realities of the NHS. This argument is deeply ironic. The last time I checked, Stephen Hawking was British. He was admitted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, (ENGLAND) earlier this year whilst ill, and remarkably, has emerged ALIVE. He had been working at the California Institute of Technology when, after being taken unwell, he returned to ENGLAND for treatment. How they resisted the urge to finish him off remains a mystery but his voice synthesiser must’ve been working overtime to try to convince them otherwise.

Professor Stephen Hawking was born in London. He moved with his family to St Albans, a cathedral city north of London, where he went to school. He received his B.A. degree at Oxford University in 1962, and later left Oxford for Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he engaged in the study of theoretical astronomy and cosmology. He is now the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, a university chair established in the 17th century. A long and distinguished career bears witness to the fact that he is very much alive and kicking…. mentally at least.
